Doppler / Ultrasound Pregnancy Checkers.
The AGRITECH DOPPLER instrument comprises of an ultrasonic transmitter/receiver which detects the earliest signs of pregnancy in animals and converts them into very distinctive sounds in the headset. The equipment uses the DOPPLER principle where a beam of ultrasound is subjected to a small frequency change when reflected from a moving surface such as the uterine artery blood flow, umbilical cord or the fetal heart. The probe which houses the transmission and the receiving crystals emits a narrow low energy ultrasound beam via a coupling medium into the abdomen of the animal. The beam is reflected from a pregnant uterus and converted into the very distinctive sounds of a confirmed pregnancy. The AGRITECH cannot give a false positive diagnosis, because the distinctive sounds are positive confirmation of pregnancy. This reliability will therefore enable the livestock farmer to make economies in time, feed and space. The diagnosis of a negative pregnancy arises when these distinctive sounds cannot be located, and the animal should be tested again within the next 7-10 days to reconfirm the original diagnosis.
The AGRITECH equipment has been designed for maximum flexibility within all types of livestock environments. The electronics are safely housed in the robust CONTOUR and RECTAL probes which have been specially designed for optimum response. The probe is connected to the headset which includes integral volume control and a socket to accommodate a secondary headset for training or confirmatory purposes.
SWINE
With the sow, pregnancy can be confirmed using the CONTOUR PROBE from as early as 16 days after service / insemination, although many still prefer to wait until about 25 days before starting diagnosis.
As with all AGRITECH equipment we are listening for the very distinctive sounds of the uterine artery, the umbilical vessels and the fetal heart. Any of these sounds will confirm a positive pregnancy.
Using the CONTOUR PROBE you can routinely check on the wellbeing of the sow and the fetuses right through until farrowing, unlike many cheaper “pulse echo” instruments which only have a few weeks use. In fact you can actually use the CONTOUR PROBE to confirm completion of farrowing, as it is able to detect the sounds of the fetal hearts of any unborn piglets retained in the uterus. This benefit is a unique feature of the DOPPLER SYSTEM.
SHEEP/GOATS
The unit can be used the same as for sows. With the CONTOUR PROBE you can commence diagnosis of pregnancy in ewes or goats from about 50 days after service / tupping / insemination. We are again initially listening for the distinctive sounds of the blood flow in the uterine artery. The ewe can be examined quite easily in the standing position, or in the sitting position such as in a shepherds chair, or completely upturned.
From between 80-100 days it is possible to determine whether the ewe will have a single or multiple birth, although this will take considerably more experience.
As with sows, this equipment can also be used to confirm completion of lambing in the case of multiple births.
Where an earlier diagnosis is required, AGRITECH have produced a special rectal probe with a small examination end, which enables an accurate diagnosis to be made from about 20 days.
